Secretariat - 1973 Belmont

Today is Kentucky Derby day although the weather is not looking too good. I made this video last year. It's the Belmont which is the third leg in the Triple Crown of Horse Racing. The Kentucky Derby is the first. Preakness is the middle race.

I edited the music and the race announcers voice to fade in and out. The music is Electric Light Orchestra's Fire On High, which was used by CBS Sports as an intro in the 70's, particularly before horse racing.

I saw this race live when I was 12 on TV. I wasn't pulling for Secretariat at the time, I was hoping for Sham to win. Sham came in second in the first two races and dueled Secretariat for much of this race until he ran out of steam and dropped out of contention. He would have been great in any other year. Secretariat set the World Record in this race (and other races) and I don't think any other horse has come much closer than 2 seconds slower, at least in the Belmont for that distance.
